I'll usually do this a couple weeks before exams and I will practice them so that I know what to expect on the day. Downloading past exam papers and doing a printout in OneNote is great, as I don't need so much paper as exam papers are long. OneNote is great for this because of the default infinite canvas. Rewriting my notes as flashcards helped a lot.Īlso, I have drawn up mind maps in OneNote for different topics. What I've done for the last semester was read over my handwriting and create flashcards from what I've written on, which is free to use (the paid subscription has more features but for most things you don't need it). ![]() I also keep the notes as subpages of topic pages to separate the different topics in the course. My strategy for learning material is that I keep all my lecture notes in a dedicated section. The palm rejection on my Surface has been great though, as I've been able to easily rest my hand on the screen without it messing up my work. It's something to get used to, but in my opinion, not a dealbreaker. So, I've found it a bit harder to keep my handwriting neat than I do on paper. Because of this, there is less friction between the pen and the screen than there is with the paper. However, the screen on the Surface is a lot more glossy than a paper notebook. As the pens are digital, they don't run out of ink. The positives are that the eraser requires no friction, so you can very quickly correct mistakes. The actual writing experience itself has its positives and negatives. Plus, there's plenty of other benefits, such as being able to record audio as I write, turn written equations into graphs (very helpful in Math), take pictures and insert them directly into my notes, etc. I think that's probably the biggest benefit of OneNote not having to sift through a mountain of paper to find what you're looking for. That's a big benefit for me, as in high school, I'd sometimes place my notes in the wrong folder, and then I'd waste so much time looking for those notes. If I've misplaced something, I can easily drag it into the right section. Organising notes is much easier on OneNote. I find the overall experience with writing my notes on my Surface to be better than on paper. You can set this OneNote page as the default template for a section so that all new pages in that section use the template. Below is a link to a OneNote document set up to this style as well as the picture used for the Cornell margins (in case anyone wants to change it for themselves). The grid lines can be swapped out to ruled if preferred. The left-hand margin is 2.5" away from the left-hand side of the page and the bottom margin is 2" away from the bottom of the page. I'm posting this to Reddit just in case anyone else is interested in using it. So, I created a Cornell template for OneNote that is purpose-built for handwriting. All the other templates on the internet seemed to be built with typing in mind. However, I couldn't find any good way of doing it in OneNote on my Surface tablet with handwriting. As a college student that has gone completely digital for my studies, I was looking for a way to use the Cornell method of note-taking, as that seems to be what people are recommending for lectures. ![]()
